Why Most Businesses Fail

  • The Startup Fantasy:
  • • 'I have a brilliant idea, let me raise funding'
  • • 'I'll quit my job and figure it out'
  • • 'If I build it, they will come'
  • The Reality:
  • • 90% of startups fail
  • • #1 reason: No market need (42%)
  • • #2 reason: Ran out of money (29%)
  • • #3 reason: Wrong team (23%)
  • The Pakistani Reality:
  • • Limited funding ecosystem
  • • Can't afford to burn money
  • • Need income while building
  • Solution: The Skill-First Model

Skill-First vs Idea-First

  • Idea-First (Risky):
  • • Start with a 'brilliant idea'
  • • Spend months building product
  • • Hope customers will buy
  • • Run out of money if they don't
  • Skill-First (Safe):
  • • Start with a marketable skill
  • • Sell the skill as a service TODAY
  • • Get cash flow immediately
  • • Use profits to fund your bigger dreams
  • Example:
  • • Idea-First: 'I'll build an app' → 6 months, $10,000, maybe fails
  • • Skill-First: 'I'll offer app development services' → Client in week 1, profit in week 2
  • The skill-first person now has PROOF of demand before building the product.

The 4-Step Transition

  • Step 1: Master a Skill
  • • Web development, design, writing, marketing, video editing
  • • You already have one from PakGurus courses!
  • Step 2: Sell It as a Service
  • • Package your skill as a service
  • • Get 3-5 paying clients
  • • Validate demand with real money
  • Step 3: Hire Others to Deliver
  • • Document your process (SOPs)
  • • Hire freelancers/juniors to do the work
  • • You become the manager/salesperson
  • Step 4: You Own the Business
  • • System runs without you
  • • You focus on growth and strategy
  • • Now launch your 'product' ideas with proven demand

Types of Skill-Based Businesses

  • Service Agency (Most Common):
  • • Web development agency
  • • Digital marketing agency
  • • Content creation agency
  • • Potential: $5,000 – $50,000/month
  • Productized Service:
  • • Fixed price, fixed scope
  • • 'I'll build you a 5-page website for $500'
  • • Easier to scale, lower margins
  • • Potential: $3,000 – $30,000/month
  • Consulting/Coaching:
  • • Sell your expertise, not your time
  • • High margins, requires authority
  • • Potential: $2,000 – $20,000/month
  • Digital Products (Later):
  • • Courses, templates, tools
  • • Build once, sell forever
  • • Start AFTER you have client expertise

Calculating Your Runway

  • Runway = How long you can survive without income
  • Calculate:
  • • Monthly expenses: Rs. _____
  • • Savings available: Rs. _____
  • • Runway: Savings ÷ Expenses = ____ months
  • The Safe Path:
  • • Keep your job/freelancing while building
  • • Only go full-time when business matches your income
  • • Never burn bridges (you might need that job back)
  • Target:
  • • 6 months runway minimum before going full-time
  • • Or business consistently earning your salary replacement
  • Remember: Desperation makes bad decisions. Safety makes good decisions.
