Validation & First Sale

In This Section, You Will Learn:

  • • Why interest ≠ validation
  • • How to get your first paying customer
  • • The pre-selling method
  • • Overcoming objections
  • • Getting deposits and commitments
  • • What to do after your first sale

Why Interest is NOT Validation

  • The Trap:
  • • 'Everyone loves my idea!'
  • • 'I got 500 likes on my post!'
  • • 'My friends say it's amazing!'
  • The Truth:
  • • Likes don't pay bills
  • • Friends want to be nice, not honest
  • • 'Interesting' means nothing
  • Real Validation:
  • • Someone gives you MONEY
  • • Someone signs a CONTRACT
  • • Someone puts a DEPOSIT down
  • The Rule: Your business isn't real until the first dollar hits your account. Focus 100% of your energy on that first sale.

The Pre-Selling Method

  • What is Pre-Selling?
  • • Selling before you build
  • • Getting payment before delivery
  • • Minimum risk, maximum validation
  • How It Works:
  • 1. Create your MVO (from previous lesson)
  • 2. Pitch to 10-20 potential customers
  • 3. If they want it, collect deposit/full payment
  • 4. THEN build/deliver the service
  • Why This Works:
  • • You never build something nobody wants
  • • You get paid to learn
  • • You have customer input while building
  • Example:
  • • 'I can build you a website in 2 weeks. $500 deposit to start, $500 on completion.'
  • • If they pay, you have validation AND funding

How to Get Your First Customer

  • The First Customer is the Hardest:
  • • No testimonials yet
  • • No proof of results
  • • No track record
  • Strategies for First Customer:
  • 1. Warm Network:
  • • Friends, family, or their businesses
  • • Ask: 'Who do you know that needs X?'
  • • Offer friends-and-family discount for testimonial
  • 2. Free → Paid:
  • • Do one project free for a great testimonial
  • • Document everything (before/after, results)
  • • Use this proof to sell the next one at full price
  • 3. Cold Outreach:
  • • Identify 50 potential clients
  • • Send personalized messages
  • • Offer 'beta pricing' for first 3 clients
  • 4. Communities:
  • • Be helpful in Facebook groups
  • • Don't spam, provide value
  • • People will ask to hire you

Overcoming Objections

  • Common Objections and Responses:
  • 'It's too expensive':
  • • 'Compared to what?' (understand their budget)
  • • 'What would you be willing to invest?'
  • • 'What's the cost of NOT solving this problem?'
  • 'I need to think about it':
  • • 'What specifically do you need to think about?'
  • • 'What would help you make a decision today?'
  • 'I don't have the budget':
  • • 'I understand. When would budget be available?'
  • • 'Would a payment plan help?'
  • 'I need to talk to my partner/boss':
  • • 'Great! Can we schedule a call with them?'
  • • 'What do you think they'll want to know?'
  • Remember: Most objections are just requests for more information.

Getting Deposits and Commitments

  • Why Deposits Matter:
  • • Proves serious intent
  • • Funds your expenses
  • • Creates commitment from client
  • • Reduces time-wasters
  • Standard Practice:
  • • 50% upfront, 50% on completion
  • • For larger projects: 40% / 30% / 30%
  • • Never start work without deposit
  • Payment Tools:
  • • Payoneer (international)
  • • Wise (low fees)
  • • PayPal (widely accepted)
  • • Bank transfer (for local)
  • What to Do After First Sale:
  • 1. Celebrate! (You're now an entrepreneur)
  • 2. Overdeliver on this client
  • 3. Get a testimonial
  • 4. Use this proof to sell more
  • 5. Repeat the process
