What Are Keyframes?
- Keyframes are markers that tell After Effects WHERE something should be at a specific TIME.
- The Concept:
- • Keyframe 1: 'At 0 seconds, the logo is here'
- • Keyframe 2: 'At 1 second, the logo is there'
- • After Effects fills in the movement between them
- Creating Keyframes:
- 1. Move playhead to starting time
- 2. Click stopwatch next to property (creates first keyframe)
- 3. Move playhead to end time
- 4. Change the property value (second keyframe auto-created)
- Think of it like: Telling a car to be at Point A at 9:00 and Point B at 9:05. The car figures out how to get there.
- The more keyframes you add, the more control you have over the motion.
The 5 Essential Properties
- These 5 properties are 90% of motion graphics:
- 1. Position (P):
- • Where the layer is on screen
- • X and Y coordinates
- • Use for slide-ins, bounces, movements
- 2. Scale (S):
- • Size of the layer (100% = original)
- • Animate from 0% to 100% for 'pop in' effects
- 3. Rotation (R):
- • How much the layer is rotated
- • Measured in degrees (360° = full rotation)
- 4. Opacity (T):
- • Transparency (0% = invisible, 100% = solid)
- • Fade in/fade out effects
- 5. Anchor Point (A):
- • The point around which a layer rotates/scales
- • Move to corner for different rotation effects
- Master these 5, and you can create most animations.
Easing – The Secret to Pro Motion
- Why amateur animation looks 'robotic': Linear motion.
- Linear Motion:
- • Same speed from start to finish
- • Looks mechanical, unnatural
- • Like a robot moving
- Eased Motion:
- • Starts slow, speeds up, slows down
- • Looks natural, organic
- • Like a real object with weight
- Applying Easy Ease:
- 1. Select keyframes
- 2. Press F9 (or right-click → Keyframe Assistant → Easy Ease)
- 3. Your motion is now professional
- Easing Types:
- • Ease Out: Fast start, slow end (object settling)
- • Ease In: Slow start, fast end (object launching)
- • Easy Ease: Slow both ends (most common)
- ALWAYS apply Easy Ease. No exceptions for beginners.
The 12 Principles (Simplified)
- Disney animators developed 12 principles. Here are the 4 most important:
- 1. Squash and Stretch:
- • Objects compress when landing, stretch when moving
- • Makes objects feel like they have weight
- • Example: Bouncing ball squashes on impact
- 2. Anticipation:
- • Small movement BEFORE the main action
- • Example: Pull back before jumping
- 3. Slow In/Slow Out (Easing):
- • Objects don't start/stop instantly
- • Gradual acceleration/deceleration
- 4. Staging:
- • Direct the viewer's eye to what's important
- • Use contrast, movement, positioning
- Don't memorize all 12. Just remember: make it feel NATURAL.
Timing and Pacing
- Timing = HOW LONG an animation takes
- Pacing = The RHYTHM of multiple animations
- General Timing Guidelines:
- • Quick actions: 0.2-0.5 seconds (snappy, energetic)
- • Normal actions: 0.5-1 second (balanced)
- • Slow actions: 1-2+ seconds (elegant, dramatic)
- For Motion Graphics:
- • Logo reveals: 0.5-1 second for main animation
- • Text appearing: 0.3-0.5 seconds
- • Scene transitions: 0.5-1 second
- Pacing Tips:
- • Don't animate everything at the same speed
- • Use contrast (fast then slow, or slow then fast)
- • Leave breathing room between animations
- • Match pacing to music/audio if present
- When in doubt, make it slightly faster. Slow motion graphics lose attention.
