Advanced Animation Techniques

In This Section, You Will Learn:

  • • What the Graph Editor is and why it matters
  • • How to use velocity curves for pro motion
  • • Motion blur for cinematic quality
  • • Advanced easing techniques
  • • Text animation mastery
  • • Shape layer animations

The Graph Editor – Pro Motion Control

  • The Graph Editor gives you 100% control over animation speed.
  • Why It Matters:
  • • Easy Ease is a starting point, not the final answer
  • • Different animations need different curves
  • • The Graph Editor is what separates beginners from pros
  • Opening the Graph Editor:
  • • Select a layer with keyframes
  • • Click the Graph Editor button (or press Shift+F3)
  • What You See:
  • • Horizontal axis = Time
  • • Vertical axis = Value or Speed
  • • Curves show how property changes over time
  • Manipulating Curves:
  • • Drag handles to change acceleration/deceleration
  • • Steep curve = fast movement
  • • Flat curve = slow movement

Common Easing Curves

  • Different animations need different curves:
  • 1. Ease Out (Landing):
  • • Fast at start, slow at end
  • • Use for: Objects settling, landing, appearing
  • • Feel: Smooth arrival
  • 2. Ease In (Launch):
  • • Slow at start, fast at end
  • • Use for: Objects leaving, accelerating
  • • Feel: Building energy
  • 3. Ease In-Out (Smooth):
  • • Slow at both ends, fast in middle
  • • Use for: Most movement
  • • Feel: Natural, physical
  • 4. Overshoot:
  • • Goes past target, bounces back
  • • Use for: Playful, energetic animations
  • • Feel: Bouncy, fun
  • Practice curve manipulation daily. It becomes intuitive.

Motion Blur – Cinematic Quality

  • Motion blur makes fast movements look realistic and cinematic.
  • What It Does:
  • • Adds blur to fast-moving objects
  • • Mimics how real cameras capture motion
  • • Makes animation feel professional
  • Enabling Motion Blur:
  • 1. Click the motion blur icon on each layer you want
  • 2. Enable the global motion blur button (top of timeline)
  • 3. Both must be on for it to work
  • When to Use:
  • • Fast movements (slide-ins, fly-outs)
  • • Rotating objects
  • • Scale animations
  • When NOT to Use:
  • • Slow, subtle animations
  • • When you need crisp edges
  • Pro Tip: Motion blur increases render time. Disable while working, enable for final export.

Text Animation Mastery

  • Text is a HUGE part of motion graphics. Master these techniques:
  • Text Animators:
  • • Select text layer
  • • Animate → Animate Text → Position/Opacity/Scale
  • • Animates each character separately!
  • Popular Text Effects:
  • Typewriter: Characters appear one by one
  • Fade In by Word: Words fade in sequentially
  • Pop In: Each letter scales up with bounce
  • Slide In: Letters slide from side
  • Per-Character Animation:
  • • Add Range Selector to control which characters animate
  • • Animate the Start/End to reveal characters
  • • Add randomize for organic feel
  • Kinetic Typography: Animating text to music/speech. High-paying skill!

Shape Layer Animations

  • Shape layers are powerful for creating graphics without external files.
  • Creating Shapes:
  • • Use Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon tools
  • • Or use Pen tool for custom shapes
  • Shape Properties to Animate:
  • Path: Morph between shapes
  • Fill: Color changes
  • Stroke: Outline animations
  • Trim Paths: Draw-on effects
  • Trim Paths (Most Useful):
  • • Creates 'line drawing' effect
  • • Perfect for icons, illustrations
  • • Animate Start/End percentages
  • Combining Shapes:
  • • Use merge paths for Boolean operations
  • • Group shapes for organization
  • • Add repeaters for patterns
  • Icon animations are HIGH demand on Fiverr. Learn shape layers well.
