Types of ANI — And the 2 That Changed Everything
You just learned that every AI today is Narrow AI (ANI). But within narrow AI, two types have exploded in the last few years and changed how the whole world works. If you understand these two, you understand almost everything happening in AI right now.
Type 1: Generative AI — the one that creates
Generative AI makes new things. You give it an instruction, and it produces something that didn’t exist before — text, images, videos, music, code.
Ask ChatGPT to write a message, and it writes one. Ask an image tool to make a poster, and it makes one. It’s called “generative” because it generates — it creates new content on demand.
This is the AI most people have used. If you’ve ever typed a question into ChatGPT and got a full answer back, you’ve used generative AI.
Type 2: Agentic AI — the one that acts
Agentic AI goes one step further. It doesn’t just create something and hand it to you — it takes action and gets things done on its own.
Think of the difference like this. Generative AI is a brilliant assistant who writes you a perfect email. Agentic AI is an assistant who writes the email, and sends it, then books the meeting, then updates your calendar — completing the whole task without you doing each step.
An “agent” can use tools, make decisions, and carry out multi-step jobs by itself. This is the newest and fastest-growing area of AI, and it’s what powers automation — which you’ll build yourself later in this bootcamp.
Key Term (Agentic AI): AI that doesn’t just create content, but takes actions and completes multi-step tasks on its own, using tools and making decisions along the way.
Why these two matter most
Generative AI changed how we create. Agentic AI is changing how we work.
Together, they’re the reason a single person in Pakistan can now do the work that used to need a whole team — writing, designing, and automating entire businesses alone. Master these two, and you’re not watching the AI revolution. You’re using it.
