Core Shopify Terms
- Theme:
- • The design template of your store
- • Controls colors, fonts, layout, everything visual
- • Like the paint, furniture, and decor of a physical shop
- • Free themes available (Dawn is excellent)
- Product:
- • Any item you sell in your store
- • Has title, description, images, price, inventory
- Collection:
- • A group of related products
- • Example: 'Men's Clothing', 'Sale Items', 'New Arrivals'
- Variant:
- • Different versions of the same product
- • Example: Size (S, M, L) or Color (Red, Blue, Black)
Frontend vs Backend
- Frontend (What Customers See):
- • The actual website/store
- • Product pages, checkout, cart
- • All the buttons, images, text
- • Controlled by your theme
- Backend/Admin (What You See):
- • Your control panel
- • Where you add products, view orders
- • Settings, analytics, apps
- • Customers never see this
- Analogy: Frontend = The restaurant dining area. Backend = The kitchen and office.
- Why This Matters: Clients will ask you to 'customize the frontend' or 'set up the backend' — now you know what they mean!
Themes and Apps Explained
- Themes:
- • Pre-made design templates
- • Install one theme at a time (active)
- • Can have multiple themes saved (for testing)
- • Popular free theme: Dawn
- • Premium themes: $150-$350 (one-time)
- Apps:
- • Add extra features to your store
- • Like plugins for WordPress
- • Examples: Reviews, WhatsApp chat, upsells, email marketing
- • Free and paid apps available
- • Find them in Shopify App Store
- Real-World Analogy: Theme = The building and interior design. Apps = The special equipment you add (security cameras, music system, card reader).
Payment & Shipping Terms
- Payment Gateway:
- • The system that processes credit card payments
- • Examples: Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay
- COD (Cash on Delivery):
- • Customer pays when parcel is delivered
- • Most popular in Pakistan (80%+ of orders)
- • Lower trust barrier for new stores
- Fulfilled/Unfulfilled:
- • Fulfilled = Order has been shipped
- • Unfulfilled = Order received but not shipped yet
- Shipping Zone:
- • Geographic regions you ship to
- • Set different rates for different areas
- Tracking Number:
- • The code customers use to track their order
- • Provided by your courier (e.g., Leopards, TCS)
Marketing & Business Terms
- Niche:
- • The specific market segment you target
- • Bad: 'Clothing' (too broad)
- • Good: 'Premium cotton kurtas for professional women'
- Conversion Rate:
- • Percentage of visitors who buy
- • 2-3% is average, 5%+ is excellent
- AOV (Average Order Value):
- • How much each customer spends on average
- • Higher AOV = more profit per order
- Meta Pixel:
- • Code that tracks visitors for Facebook/Instagram ads
- • Helps you 'retarget' people who visited but didn't buy
- SKU:
- • Stock Keeping Unit
- • Unique code for each product variant
- • Helps with inventory management
