The Psychology of Selling
In This Section, You Will Learn:
- • Features vs. Benefits (The Feature-Benefit Ladder)
- • Pain vs. Pleasure motivators
- • The 6 Principles of Persuasion (Cialdini)
- • How to write to one specific person
Features vs. Benefits
- People don't buy products. They buy better versions of themselves.
- • Feature: What the product *is* or *has*.
- • Benefit: What the product *does* for the user.
- The 'So What?' Test:
- • Feature: 'This phone has a 5000mAh battery.'
- • Ask 'So what?' -> 'You don't have to charge it often.'
- • Ask 'So what?' -> 'You won't get stuck with a dead phone during an emergency.'
- Deep Benefit: Peace of mind and safety.
- Example:
- ❌ *Don't sell the mattress (Feature).*
- ✅ *Sell the good night's sleep (Benefit).*
Pain vs. Pleasure
- Humans are motivated by two things:
- 1. Running away from Pain (Stronger motivator)
- 2. Running towards Pleasure
- Effective Copy often creates a 'Gap':
- • Point A (Pain): Where they are now (tired, broke, lonely).
- • Point B (Pleasure): Where they want to be (energetic, rich, loved).
- • The Bridge: Your Product.
- Tip: Don't be afraid to remind them of the pain briefly before offering the solution.
The Power of 'YOU'
- Copywriting is a conversation between two people.
- • Wrong: 'Our company provides solutions for customers.'
- • Right: 'You can solve your problems today.'
- Rule: Use the word 'You' 3x more than you use 'I', 'We', or 'Us'.
- Talk *to* them, not *at* them.
